Instructions for Hand Sewing Faux Fur Lining to a Crochet or Knit Hat Using a Mattress Stitch
Materials Needed:
Faux fur lining piece (pre-cut to fit the hat)
Crochet hat
Needle
Strong thread matching the fur or crochet piece
Scissors
Clips or pins
Steps:
Prepare the Fur Lining:
Cut the faux fur lining to the shape of the hat's interior. Add a small seam allowance (approximately 1/4" or 6mm) to the edges or as directed by your pattern instructions.
Ensure the nap (the direction the fur lays) faces downward when the hat is worn.
Position the Fur:
Turn the hat inside out so you can see its wrong side.
Place the faux fur lining against the interior of the hat, with the backing of the fur facing you and the fur facing outward through the hat.
Align the edges of the fur lining with the crochet fabric. Use clips or pins to hold it in place.
Thread the Needle:
Thread your needle with a strong thread that matches the faux fur or crochet piece. Knot the end securely.
Begin Sewing:
Starting at one edge, insert the needle through the crochet fabric (catching only the wrong side of the stitches to keep the thread invisible on the outside). Pull the needle through the edge of the fur lining.
Use a whip stitch or mattress stitch around the perimeter of the lining, keeping your stitches small and evenly spaced.
Maintain Alignment:
As you sew, adjust the fur lining to ensure it remains securely positioned. Avoid stretching the crochet fabric or the lining.
Keep the fur nap clear of your stitches to avoid trapping it in the thread. Use your fingers or the needle itself to push the fur aside as needed.
Secure the End:
Once you’ve sewn around the entire edge, tie a secure knot on the wrong side of the crochet fabric. Trim any excess thread.
Finishing Touches:
Inspect your stitches to ensure the lining is snugly and evenly attached.
Turn the hat right side out and fluff the fur if necessary to hide the seams.
